Here we will cover some of the many moral failings and scandals of cavalry chapel with the biggest fish Lonnie Frisbee, and Chuck Smith.
Lonnie Frisbee
I would be remiss not to mention the history of Lonnie Frisbee, in all of this is because without Lonnie, I believe there would’ve been no Calvary Chapel movement and Chuck Smith would have been left to pastoring the dying church that he was before he met Lonnie.
Lonnie Frisbee was an unfortunate soul who came from an abusive background and got caught up in the hippie movement doing drugs and participating in free sex with both men and women. He claims to have found God during an acid trip. Just by his testimony we can safely say That this was not a true conversion. He documents his struggle with homosexuality in his autobiography. I’m sure you can find it on Amazon or any other book retailers. He was married for a short time to Connie Frisbee who in an interview said that Chuck Smith treated them very badly That even at the height of their ministry, they were still diving in dumpsters to find food to eat, and they were living communally in a house with many people. This caused a great stress on their marriage, and when Connie went to Chuck for help and counseling for her and Lonnie Chuck flat out, refused to help and basically said that the ministry and all the people that we’re getting saved were more important than her marriage to Lonnie and that she needed to suck it up. Again, I am not giving my testimony yet, but I have been privy to this type of unbiblical advice that a Calvary Chapel Pastor will give, because they have no formal training except for the two year online course that they take to become Calvary chapel pastors and that is mostly listening to teaching tapes by Chuck and reading Calvary Chapel distinctives. It is not even an accredited course and the diploma from Calvary Chapel College is worthless outside the denomination. anyway, Lonnie Frisbee would take drugs and have homosexual encounters on Saturday night and then preach on Sunday morning. This is all covered in his autobiography. when knowledge of Lonnie‘s sinful lifestyle came to light instead of giving him Matthew 18 discipline which would’ve brought him before at least a couple of elders or deacons, which is I stated before Calvary Chapel does not have, and if Lonnie didn’t listen to reason Chuck could’ve brought him before the congregation as described in Matthew 18. But there was no such new testament government in place so being that Chuck had the sole decision making responsibility he quietly dismissed Lonnie. In my opinion this did Lonnie a great disservice and maybe if Chuck had brought his friend under church discipline, Lonnie may have repented. Instead, Lonnie went on to get involved in the vineyard movement, but then fell away shortly thereafter because of his homosexual lifestyle. lonnie Frisbee died of aids, March 12, 1993. I see this, not as only a moral failing on Lonnie’s part, but also on Chuck’s part for not trying to help his friend. Chuck Smith
This assessment of Chuck Smith, along with that of Lonnie Frisbee will show that Calvary Chapel had absolutely no solid foundation from its very beginning.

The reason I am sharing this passage with you is because Chuck Smith made a false prophecy in May 1981 that Jesus would return and when that failed, he predicted again, and December of 1981 that Jesus would return. let us see evidence from his own books

This was all based on a flaw in understanding of Matthew Chapter 24 and the fig tree illustration. In his book, End Times, © 1978, Chuck Smith provided a 3rd grade math example for the reader. An excerpt from page 35 follows:
This is a false prophecy and a carnal sin, and although Chuck did not die right away from this false prophecy, you should duly note that he died a horrible death of throat cancer. Jesus also warns about making false prophecies in the New Testament, especially when it comes to making predictions on his return.

You can also see evidence of Chuck Smith’s 1981 prediction on YouTube by typing why did Pastor Chuck Smith predict the rapture? This video is especially damming because it is presented by Calvary chapels own Mike Winger, who is a Calvary chapel pastor. But very confusingly he states that Pastor Chuck was not a false prophet. I guess in his expositional study, he skipped over Deuteronomy and Matthew.
The next moral failing I will talk about is that Pastor Chuck was a heretic. No I’m not saying this because of his expositional teaching style. I am saying this because he said on his radio program that Catholics were basically Christians. We have to understand the meaning of heresy to know that he was a heretic.heresy is defined as a departure from orthodox Christian teachings. And this is definitely a heresy, because Catholics are nothing like Christians. Their salvation is based on works just like every other religion in the world, and they confess their sins to a priest. If you follow Catholicism to its end you will not go to heaven. you can listen to the three minute snippet of Pastor Chuck making this statement on his radio program. All you have to do is go on YouTube and search Chuck Smith believed that Catholics are basically Christians. The video is presented by Awitness4christ.

This claim by Chuck, the Catholics are basically Christians should not be a surprise to anyone who has done some research and knows that Rick Joyner, and Jerry Boykin, who have been mainstays in Calvary Chapel are part of the Catholic knighthood called the Knights of Malta, and they are loyal to the pope. One of the other moral failings of Chuck Smith is that he had a 10 minute conversation with a woman on his radio program in which he told her it was OK to have an abortion. Greg Laurie
To be honest, I don’t know much about Greg Laurie other than he came under the tutelage of Chuck Smith in the late 60s or early 70s and that he was thrust into pastoring a church after only being saved for two years and I say that loosely because I am not sure if his conversion was true or not, I just don’t know but when you were speaking about a movement like Calvary Chapel, it is hard to believe that he was truly converted. He went on to do harvest crusades and pastor his own church, and he became a sort of sidekick to Billy Graham. What I have witnessed from Greg Laurie is a mixture of truth and error in his presentation of the gospel. In the giveaway Bibles that he did for the Billy Graham association, he did put that we had to repent and believe I have even heard him say, during one of his crusades that we needed to repent in order to have salvation. But what really confuses me is that he did a one minute commercial for TV where he said all you have to do is believe, this is a mixture of truth and error. You cannot have belief without repentance. It is impossible.

Jesus repeats this again twice in the book of Luke

Repentance is so important that Jesus talked about it often as the first step to salvation and the second being belief. Greg had an awesome opportunity and platform to present the biblical gospel in one minute, but he did not. He said only believe the Bible speaks against easy belief in the book of James
James 2:19 KJV
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
So if the demons believe and tremble, and they are not saved, what makes Greg Laurie think that telling people to just believe is going to get them to heaven?it won’t he preached a false gospel and God will hold him accountable for that. Bob Grenier
The story is near and dear to my heart, and I followed it for approximately two years. It is the story of Alex Grenier and his brothers, who suffered emotional physical and sexual abuse at the hands of their father Bob Grenier, who was the head pastor at Calvary Chapel Visalia and was also the local police departments chaplain.
When when Alex went to the local police for help they did not even investigate, but only took a statement. Because of Bob’s influence, they would not investigate. When Alex and his brothers reached out to Chuck Smith, the allegations fell on deaf ears. I read an article years ago about this, which I cannot find at the moment since Alex has since reconciled with Bob, and most of the negative articles about Bob are taken down. But in the article Chuck Smith made the claim that he had no authority over Bob, and that each Calvary Chapel was its own entity. So that was his dumb excuse for not helping Alex and his brothers. Since then Alex has reconciled with his father, Bob and the rest of his family which is fine, because the Bible says to love our enemies, and pray for those who spitefully use us but it doesn’t change what Bob did. At one point he and Calvary Chapel went as far as the sue his son Alex for making these allegations. Again, this should’ve been handled by Chuck Smith as soon as it came to his attention he should’ve Matthew 18 disciplined Bob but like I said, who would he bring him to? There is no board there is no Church just an individual pastor over a calvary chapel who calls all the shots. This is the dangerous cocktail. I was warning you about when we started this article. And this is a prime example of what I am talking about and the fact that Bob sued his own son was pathetic, and the Bible speaks against this.
